Independent sales representatives are often the most appropriate choice for small business. The sales representative works on commission. The representative does not take title, but is merely an order taker. You pay the commission after the sales representative completes the sale. Find some good representatives who know your industry. Carefully negotiate compensation, payment, territory, competing products, and other necessary terms. Draft a clear, concise written agreement. Consider using different representatives for different markets. Require regular reports and keep the representative updated with current information, sales literature, and products. Keep close watch on performance, and don’t hesitate to change.
The easiest way to find a sales agent is through the annual directory published by the Manufacturers’ Agents National Association (MANA). MANA publishes a monthly magazine called Agency Sales, a huge selection of research reports, and a series of special reports.
