Fine-Tuning Tips
If you are using the business plan to obtain outside debt or equity financing, you need to fully support and document your analysis and conclusions. Make a very professional presentation.
Here are a few tips on adding the final touches and making sure the final plan is ready:
- Provide an executive summary and table of contents.
- Tab each section for easy reference.
- Utilize an attractive and professional looking cover or binder.
- Make sure the plan fits your need. It should not be too long, short, fancy, or plain.
- Use graphs, charts, diagrams, pictures, photographs, and other relevant visual aids to add interest and improve comprehension.
- Number and account for each copy of the plan, and indicate that the information is proprietary and confidential.
- Obtain independent review and recommendations of the plan from entrepreneurs, accountants, lawyers, bankers, and other carefully chosen third parties.
- Make it clear what you expect to accomplish in the business and what you want from the reader.
- Explain in both quantitative and qualitative terms the benefit to the user of the products or services.
- Present solid evidence of marketability.
- Explain and justify the product development and any manufacturing process along with associated costs.
- Document the financial projections and data, and ensure they are realistic and believable.
- Portray the management team as experienced and having complementary skills.
- Show investors how they will cash out in an appropriate time frame with capital appreciation.
